A corollary to Godwin's Law?

by Richard Smith last modified 2007-05-14 14:24

Back in 1990 Mark Godwin proposed a law about the time it would take an online discussion group to start being populated with references to Hitler and Nazis. He figured as time went on it was inevitable. I'd like to propose a corollary - that as soon as people start using a new form of communication technology, someone will start labelling its use "addictive."

A corollary to Godwin's Law?

The original "Addictive" communication device

Richard's corollary is simple, and based on the much more familiar Godwin's Law. In that formulation, it was only a matter of time before people started using Hitler/Nazi analogies to describe behaviour in an online discussion board. My proposed corollary is that as soon as people start discussing the use of a new form of communication media it is only a matter of time before someone calls it "addictive."
